Cantata simply means “sung piece.” Starting with a hundred-year-old hymn tune and a two-thousand-year-old story, J.S. Bach spun his Cantata 140 into pure gold. One of his best known and loved, “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” (in English: “Sleepers, wake!”), is well worth looking at on its own. The longest of its movements lasts barely 10 minutes, yet into seven movements Bach packs the height and depth of his technical skill, his joy, passion and spirituality. From the rich tapestry of the initial chorus, through two dramatic duets and the sweeping serenity of its middle movement (one of Bach’s “Greatest Hits”), to the majesty of its final chorale, this piece is a treasure indeed. (We’ll not leave out the two fascinating recitatives either!) No musical background necessary, just come and enjoy.
Instructor Peter Subers has loved singing since his mother taught him to sing hymns in two-part harmony over the dinner dishes. He is regular baritone soloist for First Church (Reformed) in Albany and recently sang as soloist with the choir of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Albany, in performances of Handel’s “Messiah” and Bach’s “St. John Passion".
