A Musical Viennese Café at the Rice Mansion
Saturday March 27th, 4pm
Join Music from Salem in a cozy, casual mini-fundraiser afternoon of Viennese sachertorte, kaffeeschokolade, coffee, tea, and chamber music. MfS artistic directors, colleagues, and graduate students from U-Mass Amherst and The Boston Conservatory will take time out from their preparation for the next day's concert to sight-read Mozart quartets and other goodies.
You can even bring your own sheet music from the classical period (for up to 6 strings) for us to play. Guaranteed to fend off winter chill and damp!

Music from Salem Artistic Director, Lila Brown, helps you get more out of listening to classical music from the interesting vantage point of a performer. The more you know about it, the greater the sense of wonderment, listening pleasure and fascination. Live demonstration, cds, and discussion are utilized to shed light through biographical insights, historical context, the "story", musical form and the emotional "message" of the music.
The thread through the three winter sessions will be J.S. Bach:
Jan 17 – Bach paired with Ligeti, composer of music for the epic film "2001", and two monumental chaconnes (what is a chaconne?); Ligeti's escape to Austria hidden under a shipment of mailbags; and an in-depth look at Bach's secret world of numerology.
Feb. 14 – Bach's cello suites, and a new bestseller written about them by Eric Siblin about the search for a lost manuscript.
March 14 – Bach's organ fantasy, and a transcription for viola written by Kodaly for viola.
Come find out what sweeps you away!
No musical background necessary. Just bring curiosity and ears.
